One day, years ago, I was passing through my dining room when I saw this beautiful little face peering in at me through the sliding glass doors. Ah! A little visitor, I thought. She was there again the next morning. And the next. She wore a collar and I thought surely she must belong to someone...but she never left. I concluded that her owners must have moved and just left her behind to fend for herself. I set a soft bed out for her and fed her every day.
Soon, the cold, harsh October winds began to blow and she lay huddled in her little bed looking in at me so beseechingly.
And one day, my soft-hearted husband said...Ok, Sandi, I give up...just bring her in!
And I ran to the door, opened it and in she came! She never went out again! In fact, one day our back door blew open while we were out and when we came home I was frantic thinking she had run out and disappeared. But no, I found her crouching in the basement as far away from that open door a...
